Job Description

 The Underwriting Supervisor (UWS) provides a full range of underwriting support and customer service for all of ProAg’s underwriting business units. Participates in (and may lead) the successful implementation of underwriting and company projects. Consistently plans, organizes and prioritizes a variety of tasks and responsibilities to achieve goals and objectives. The UWS reviews and evaluates all types of insurance applications and documents. Maintains a strong working knowledge of regulatory rules and company regulations and procedures. The UWS reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Operations.

  Key Responsibilities:

 • Manages regional Underwriting Staff for Multi-Peril insurance products.

 • Promotes the execution of ProAg business strategies including implementation and training of the ProAgWorks application

 • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of company policies and procedures.

• Demonstrates proficient knowledge of company software applications.

• Supports the analysis and research of detailed policy information related to FCIC error resolution and manages the individual Underwriter error percentages.

• Supports the interpretation of FCIC documents.

• Prepares and processes policies and endorsements.

• Monitor, manage, utilize, and disseminate reports.

• Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

• Responds to complex inquiries from Agents, RMA and RSOs and utilizes set procedures when doing so.

• Supports the review of policy information for insurance coverage and other information to determine if application is acceptable for the program(s) available

• Communicates orally, by correspondence or in person with account representatives, clients, and underwriters to obtain further information, run quotes, explains company underwriting policies or service existing accounts.

• Assists Sales, Claims, Compliance and Accounting in the resolution of problems and questions.

• Collaborates effectively with other Underwriting Supervisors and the ProAg organization.

• Presents a professional appearance at all times

• Assists Agents in the resolution of problems and questions. 

• Demonstrates best practices and desired behaviors when dealing with problem underwriting concerns, issue resolution, training and Agents

• Assists with data entry as needed

• Attends required training sessions

• Follows procedures when handling calls from Agents

• Conduct daily duties in a professional appearance and manner

• Communicates information clearly and effectively

• Produce accurate written communication

• Ensures compliance with organization policies and government regulations including all RMA rules and timelines

• Effectively collaborate with RVP/HR on the common managerial duties of hiring, disciplinary action, performance management, etc. and assist with any necessary actions associated with those duties

• Provide training, guidance, and assist in managing succession plans for Underwriting staff in assigned territory

• Conduct required staff performance evaluations and file reviews in accordance with ProAg’s performance evaluation process

• Assist in the development and implementation of training for Underwriting Staff

• Effectively exhibit and model professional behavior in all work and work-related activities

• Ensure staff is performing at a high level to include meeting deadlines, thoroughly following procedures, and representing ProAg in a professional manner

• Other duties and projects may be assigned


Job Requirements

Qualifications required:

• Requires an Associate’s Degree and/or five years of experience in the crop insurance industry or a related field

• Expertise with underwriting concepts, practices and procedures within the crop insurance industry

• Proficiency in software applications to include Outlook, Internet and Microsoft Office

• Proficiency in written and mathematical processes

Qualifications desired:

• Ability to learn and utilize proprietary software and automated underwriting and/or processing systems

• Strong analytical and problem solving skills with an attention to detail.

• Superior verbal and written communication skills

• Skill and ability to read and understand applications, reports, financial statements, contracts, rating manuals and other insurance related materials

• Proven administration and customer service skills

• Experience supervising staff, organizing and monitoring work flow
