Job Description


Position Summary: The Underwriter position provides a full range of underwriting support and customer service to ProAg’s underwriting business units. The Underwriter is involved in the review of crop insurance documents. Maintaining a strong working knowledge of regulatory rules and company regulations and procedures is essential. The Underwriter reports to the Underwriting Supervisor.


Essential functions and responsibilities:


• Reviews policy information for crop insurance coverage, proper rating, and other information to determine if application is acceptable for the available program or selected coverage


• Responds to questions from agents and insured's received via email, telephone, mail and fax


• May verify rates of policies or check previously rated policies for proper rating using the tools available such as the RMA and ProAg quoting applications


• Utilizes knowledge of automated underwriting and/or processing systems to develop information for new or renewal policies


• Prepares quotations for agents and answers questions from agents, policyholder, or prospects


• Assists agents with comments or questions about applications and the requirements for acceptance by the company


• Analyze and research detailed policy information related to FCIC error resolution and resolves any uncleared items


• Reads and interprets FCIC documents


• Analyzes and revises acreage reports


• Responds to common inquiries from RMA and RSOs.


• Reviews requests for cancellation, endorsements, etc.


• Reviews policies for renewal consideration


• Request additional documentation necessary for the processing of an application, endorsement or cancellation


• Enter and/or research information into computer system


• Communicate with various ProAg departments, agents and agencies via email, letter and phone including the Sales, Claims, Compliance, and Accounting departments




• Follows procedures when handling calls from Agents


• Conduct daily duties in a professional appearance and manner


• Communicates information clearly and effectively


• Produce accurate written communication


• Ensures compliance with organization policies and government regulations including all deadlines associated with SCD’s, ARD’s, PRD’s, accounting cutoff’s, and fund designations


• Demonstrates best practices and desired behaviors when dealing with problem underwriting concerns, issue resolution, and training


• Collaborates effectively with other Underwriters and the ProAg organization


• Assists with data entry as needed


• Attends required training sessions


Nonessential skills and experience:


• Other duties and projects may be assigned

Job Requirements


Qualifications required:

• High School diploma or GED

• Familiarity with underwriting concepts, practices and procedures

• Ability to learn and utilize proprietary software

• Strong analytical and problem solving skills

• Superior verbal and written communication skills

• Proficiency in software applications to include Outlook, Internet and Microsoft Office

Qualifications desired:

• Minimum one (1) year experience in crop insurance, agriculture field or other insurance

• Skill and ability to read and understand applications, reports, financial statements, contracts, rating manuals and other insurance related materials

• Proven administration and customer service skills.
