Job Description

The Manager of Software Development is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing all business applications for ProAg. The person in this role manages and mentors a Software Development team of five direct reports and three contract employees. The key challenges facing the Development Manager is shoring up current applications by meeting and exceeding industry standards while ensuring each application group is a cohesive and productive team.

The environment and culture for this role will require the person to be very adaptable, collaborative and support an agile work environment. This position will collaborate closely with the Director of Software Development and peer managers for business direction and guidance.


The person taking the Manager of Software Development role will spend a majority of their time in three key areas. They are:

  • Assess status of all current applications. During the first 60 days, review and identify potential problems and implement appropriate corrective action plans. Work closely with application teams to determine key needs.
  • Develop best practice standards and apply standards to current applications. Within the first 6 months, this person is responsible for developing and applying industry standards to ensure each application maintains a good “health check” so applications continue to operate with quality code.
  • Establish as a project architect and mentor/lead a team of 5—8 software engineers. During the first few week, meet with all the team members and asses their ability to meet challenges and demands of current projects. Develop a team development plan by outlining key training opportunities within the first 6 months.
  • Develop cohesive teams. This person will be responsible for ensuring each application team is working effectively, and collaboratively and delivering feature functionality within project timelines. It is important that the Development Manager earns the respect of the team while identify any gaps within the first 60 days and adheres to expectations of best practice and quality work.
  • Conduct code reviews, unit test coverage and shore up automation for current project applications. This person will act as individual contributor within the various application teams. (about 50 percent)

Job Requirements

The Manager of Software Development for an insurance agency should have 5-10 years background in software development, writing code, and 3-5 years of supervising a team with proven successful implementations of applications.

The technical skills required for this position is an in-depth knowledge of C#, .NET, MVC & SPA, Angular for .NET, Entity Framework and code first database generation, Javascript & jQuery, CSS/HTML, TSQL and Stored Procs. Also required is knowledge in .NET Software Development, including Visual Studio 2012/2013, Entity Framework PowerTools, ReSharper, Team Foundation Server, SQL Server Management Studio, SSRS/SSIS packages.
